15/11/2008 - Looking back: Stags beat Doncaster in ten-goal thriller

The Stags may have struggled away from home so far this season, but in 1966/67 they were having no such problems. And 42 years ago to the day, Mansfield powered to a success that was reported in the Evening Post as "another fine away win."

With Doncaster's third choice keeper Cromack enduring a nightmare evening, Mansfield looked to have the game wrapped up after they swept into a 2-1 lead by the end of the first half.

But the strong wind caused problems throughout the game, and contributed to an explosion of goals in the second period.

Rovers scored three times in a 13-minute spell, with striker Ogden bagging a hat-trick, and the Stags found themselves behind for the first time with the score 4-3 after 64 minutes.

But McKinney and Ferns shored up the defence for the visitors, who hit back with a devastating burst of their own.

They retaliated with three goals in 16 minutes to take the points and send a large following of travelling fans home happy.

Bill Curry scored two of the goals with headers while Stuart Brace also grabbed a double, meaning the winger took his tally for the season to an impressive 13.

A rarer sight was to see McKinney and Morris, who pulled the strings for Mansfield, both score directly from long-range free-kicks.

The victory lifted the Stags up to third place in Division Three, with nine wins and 23 points from their 18 games. Only Bristol Rovers and leaders QPR were above them.

But the season was to end in disappointment as their promotion push eventually faded.

Although they scored 84 goals, they also conceded 79 and finished ninth in the table with 49 points. It was still a creditable achievement, but not what they had hoped for.

Doncaster were eventually relegated in 23rd place, conceding 117 goals - some 28 more than anyone else in the division.

November 15 certainly seems to bring out the goals in Mansfield.

In the 1958/59 season they were involved in a seven-goal thriller before losing 4-3 at home to Bradford City.

The Field Mill crowd would be royally entertained if a similar amount of goals flew in today.
