18/11/2008 - Stags winger Arnold has what it takes - McEwan

Billy McEwan today urged Mansfield winger Nathan Arnold to strive to bring a greater consistency to his game.Like many supporters, the Stags boss has been left frustrated by the 21-year-old's in-and-out, despite his undoubted talent.

Arnold showed his capabilities at Chesterfield where he scored, and was a constant source of problems for the home defence.

He also impressed in the 3-0 win over Salisbury City last Saturday, where he was unfortunate to have a goal ruled out for an offside flag when he appeared to be onside.

Now McEwan wants to see the former youth team player replicating those displays on a regular basis.

"Nathan has not got the England C call-up like JD (Jonathan D'Laryea) did, but if he plays like he can, he will do," he said.

"He has potential, as have a lot of players before him. It's about whether he can fulfil it.

"Some go out of the game and end up playing park football because it's hard being a professional.

"But it is also an enjoyable one that many people would swap their jobs for tomorrow. .

"It is all about hard work and endeavour and you have to produce. That's what everyone has to keep looking at."

McEwan is relieved to have got back to winning ways against Salisbury - their first success in six matches.

He said: "We have come through a tough period where we have played Wrexham, Torquay, York three times and Chesterfield.

"But we are building a team here and I think the signs are encouraging."
